Staying in is the new going out, with many of us preferring a night at home with our loved ones rather than a night on the town. But despite our best efforts, a night in can still end up costing us a small fortune. With that in mind, I’ve put together a few tips on how to save money on home entertainment.

How to save money on home entertainment

With modern technology all around us, we love to be constantly entertained. Whether it’s listening to our favourite music and having a drink with a few friends, or curling up in front of a film with the kids, there’s always some kind of technology being used. But TVs, sound systems and entertainment packages can cost us a fortune if we’re not careful. There are a few things you can do to cut the costs.

Cut back on your entertainment packages

Many of us have all singing all dancing TV packages that we just don’t need. We’ve recently cut back on our Sky package, taking off movies and saving £18 a month! We never watched anywhere near enough films to warrant paying that amount, so it was just money going down the drain. Be honest about the packages you use and you might be shocked at how much money you could save.

Take advantage of special offers

Many providers such as Sky TV and Now TV will have special offers running throughout the year. These are a great way to get premium packages at a discounted rate. Just make sure that you remember to cancel the package at the end of the offer period!

If you’ve been a customer previously, then you’ll often get emailed special offers, so it’s worth checking your emails regularly.

Threaten to leave

You can save an absolute fortune on your entertainment packages when you threaten to leave! This works really well with Sky TV who hate losing customers, but it’s worth trying with pretty much any supplier.

Be aware that not every company will offer you a discount when you threaten to leave, but it’s always worth giving it a go anyway. You could save hundreds of pounds over the course of the year.

Look out for sales

Big ticket items such as televisions and sound systems are often heavily discounted at various times throughout the year. If you can, then hold off buying these items until sale time. The best sale events tend to be Black Friday, Cyber Monday and the January sales. The online sales are often the best option, particularly if you make use of a cashback site too! And of course there’s the added bonus of avoiding the crowds.

If you enjoy a night in, then home entertainment can be a huge part of your life, but it really doesn’t need to cost the earth.  Use these tips and see how much money you could save. Do you have any tips for saving money on your home entertainment? We’d love to hear about them.
